When will Reliance JIO switch back to the free calling policy?

Reliance Jio took the social media on storms with the announcement of 6p/min outgoing calling rate for calls going to other operators. Reliance clarified that the decision was taken with regards to the Interconnect Usage Charge or IUC fixed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

To compensate for the losses to the customers JIO has announced the free data of 1GB for every 10 rps spent.

Jio broke the news with the following announcement.

The recovery of IUC will be made through Top-Up recharges and ONLY TILL THE IUC CHARGE IS MADE ZERO BY TRAI.

Know more about IUC.

These charges are not applicable to

(a) all Jio to Jio calls;

(b) all incoming calls;

(c) Jio to landline calls; and

(d) calls made using WhatsApp or FaceTime and similar platforms.

The news came as a surprise and shock to the millions of JIO customers. JIO has made a reform in the telecom sector with free calling and minimal data charges. Internet and calling rates have plunged to near zero facilitating internet and calling service to the poorest of the poor. Other renowned telecom operators were also forced to bring down the internet and calling changes to a substantial level.

Interestingly Reliance JIO is the first company to levy outgoing calling charges back on its customers. It would be interesting to see if other operators struggling for their existence also follows the JIO footsteps.

Social media and JIO customer does not seem to be very impressed with the outgoing call change policy. This can be a big never thought second chance for the operators working on the revival plans if they are successful in converting the distressed JIO customers into their assets.
